Lofoten, Norway
Stetind and Lofoten Islands
Some impressions from our climbing trip above the Arctic Circle.
Climbers‘ paradises – they still exist, even outside the Mediterranean or in South East Asia!
How about a trip above the Arctic Circle to the Lofoten Islands? The region offers granite of the very finest quality, perfect climbing routes with spectacular cracks, corner systems and wonderful slab climbing. Plus, perfect temperatures in midsummer and 24 hours daylight. The constant light makes tour planning easy, as you can climb a long multi-pitch route late in the evening – headlamps are not necessary. Climbing always takes place in a breathtaking landscape, usually with a view of a fjord or the sea.
Climbing the highest granite obelisk on earth
Norway‘s 1392 m high national mountain Stetind on the Tysfjord is certainly the most striking mountain in the region due to its shape and location. While trad climbing predominates in Norway, there are nearly no bolted climbing routes due to the climbing ethics in the country, some bolted belay ankers can be found on the Lofoten Islands. However, bolts are not permitted on Stetind, so the climbing and protection is much more serious. In combination with the already longer routes and significantly more difficult approaches, the atmosphere is more alpine than on the Lofoten Islands.
Facts
Let’s see where it is:
Getting there:
Flight via Oslo twice a day to Bardufoss (cheap car hire here). From there it‘s an hour and a half by car to Bjerkvik/Narvik. Continue driving to the destination area.
Best time of the year:
The summer months are fantastic, as you can climb 24 hours a day thanks to the constant daylight.
What I've used:
The STORM helmet is light as a feather, can be adjusted very easily and therefore fits perfectly.
Caution:
There is a sugar tax in Norway, so chocolate and cakes are crazy expensive here. It is best to bring an adequate supply from home.
Culinary recommendation:
Regional salmon and cod are available in best quality. Don‘t forget the barbecue grill!
