Sicily, Italy

A breath of nostalgia blows around San Vito lo Capo

Sport climbing in Sicily – that means countless great lines directly at the sea and in one of the oldest sport climbing destinations of Europe.

Facts

Let’s see where it is:

Best time of the year:

Autumn to spring. In summer temperatures rise up to 45°C.

Route equipment:

The climbing areas for baseclimbs are mostly well equipped. There are occasionally rusty bolts due to the proximity to the sea. Additional mobile protection is necessary for the long routes at Monte Monaco.

Climbing gear:

70 – 80 m single rope, 14 quickdraws, Nuts, Cams, Tricams.

What I've used:

The C.A.M.P. Tricams work generally great in limestone with its narrow and round holes. Tricams offer reliable protection on placements where regular Cams are too wide due to their design and where Nuts cannot be properly wedged.

Caution:

San Vito lo Capo is well known for its fantastic baseclimbs. Even if there are multi pitch routes at Monte Monaco, a visit to the island is worthwhile primarily because of the short sport climbing routes.
